SPAR Scotland’s carrier bag initiative, designed to give back to local communities as well reduce carrier bag usage, benefitted its last Dundee and Fife recipients for the year recently, bringing the total raised and donated to local charities and organisations from the start of the year to £67,500.

Dundee charities, The Brae, Ardler Village Trust and Spectrum Playscheme collected their share of over £1000 which was raised by SPAR’s Ballindean, Macalpine and Perth Road stores and in Fife a share of over £2000 was donated to Gilven House, Puffin Club, Maggies Centre and Ladybank Trust, raised by SPAR’s Glamis Centre and Bighty Avenue stores in Glenrothes and stores in Birnam Road, Kirkcaldy and Commercial Road Ladybank.

The initiative, which has seen over a staggering £180,000 being raised for local charities since its launch in 2008, simply donates the 2p charge from every ‘single use’ carrier bag sold.

Every 2p is collected and donated to a locally nominated charity, benefitting not only the local area in which SPAR serves, but also positively impacting on the environment. Such is the case that SPAR has reduced its carrier bag usage by over 40% since the launch of the scheme.
