ERSKINE HOSPITAL RECEIVES BOOST FROM SPAR

Erskine Hospital representatives were presented with a cheque for £5,000 today at SPAR Bargarran Shopping Centre, Erskine in Renfrewshire.

The money has been raised from local SPAR stores in Irvine, Thornliebank, Port Glasgow, Erskine, Irvine, Largs, Lochwinnoch, Saltcoats, Wemyss Bay, West Kilbride & Kilwinning

The monies donated have been raised through the sale of carrier bags in the many SPAR convenience stores owned and operated by SPAR Scotland wholesaler and retailer CJ Lang and Son Limited.

The initiative, which has seen over a staggering £174,000 being raised for local charities since its launch in 2008, simply charges customers 2p for every single use carrier bag purchased.

Every 2p is collected and donated to a locally nominated charity, benefitting not only the local area in which SPAR serves, but also positively impacting on the environment. Such is the case that SPAR has reduced its carrier bag usage by over 40% since the launch of the scheme.

This is the second year in which Erskine Hospital has benefited from the carrier bag initiative having received £2,500 in 2010. Founded in 1916, Erskine has provided nursing and medical care for former members of our Armed Forces through two world wars and the more recent conflicts and peace keeping initiatives of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Re-building shattered lives, restoring dignity and providing first class care to ex-Service men and women both young and old have been the cornerstones on which Erskine has built an unrivalled reputation.

Social activities are a large feature of the care at Erskine and they have very active and enthusiastic recreation teams, therefore it has been decided to allocate the funds raised by SPAR to sponsoring the hugely popular Annual Erskine Ladies Lunch.
