SPAR Ashgrove Road Aberdeen owned and operated by CJ Lang and Son Limited has recently donated a generous £5,000 to their local charity – Friends of Roxburghe House.

The money was raised through the sales of single- use carrier bags, which is costing shoppers 5p per bag.

Roxburghe House is a specialist palliative care unit in Aberdeen where care concentrates on symptom control for patients with life limiting illness. Their staff and Friends work hard together to create an environment of care, compassion and understanding.

Friends of Roxburghe House said: “We are extremely grateful for the very generous donation of £5,000 received from Spar, on the recommendation of the staff in the branch at Ashgrove Road.  It is gratifying to see the carrier bag charge, paid by local customers of this branch, being given to a very local charity.  At present, Roxburghe House is undergoing a major refurbishment, but this project does not cover the facilities we would like to provide for younger visitors to the hospital.  We hope to use the donation to modernise the play area to entertain any young members of patients’ families during visits to their loved ones. Many families spend long hours at the hospital, and keeping the youngest members occupied can sometime be difficult.  It would be beneficial to kit out the play area with modern facilities and equipment that will entertain and occupy them, allowing other family members to spend time with the patients”.

Bill Christie, Area Manager for SPAR Scotland, said: We are thrilled to be handing over this donation to our local charity- Friends of Roxburghe House. The customers who bought their plastic bags have been able to generate a great amount to help assist the charity with its valuable work.”
