CJ Lang and Son’s SPAR store in Jedburgh launched an in store campaign to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Raise Funds earlier this year. The store encouraged customers to reuse their carrier bags. Every time a customer reused a carrier bag the store donated 10p to a local school. The schools were; Jedburgh Grammar School, Ancrum, Howdenburn & Parkside Primary Schools.

Customers were handed a green voucher every time they reused a carrier bag in store and then chose a school to support by placing their voucher in the appropriate box. £114 was donated to Parkside Primary School, £120 to Ancrum Primary School, £144 to Jedburgh Grammar School and £222 to Howdenburn Primary School.

Store manager Gary Kowbel, said of the scheme:
“Our customers loved the idea of helping their local community and really got behind this initiative. As a community store, we are committed to helping reduce the number of plastic carrier bags used in store and to reducing the waste in Jedburgh. We thank the local community for supporting this and by doing so, helping to raise funds for our local schools in the process.”

The store is open Monday – Sunday 5.30am until 10pm. The SPAR store offers a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen foods, soft drinks and snacks, grocery products, off licence, household products and lottery services to the local community. Bill payment and mobile phone top up are all available through the store’s PayPoint facility.
