CJ Lang and Son’s SPAR store in Newport launched an in store campaign to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Raise Funds earlier this year. The store encouraged customers to reuse their carrier bags. Every time a customer reused a carrier bag the store donated 10p to a local cause. The two causes were; Newport Primary School and Riverview Lodge Care Home.

Customers were handed a green voucher every time they reused a carrier bag in store and then chose a cause to support by placing their voucher in the appropriate box. £180 was donated to Newport Primary School with £220 donated to Riverview Lodge Care Home.

Store manager Michelle Pease, said of the scheme:
“Our customers loved the idea of helping the local community and really got behind this initiative. As a community store, we are committed to helping reduce the number of plastic carrier bags used in store and to reducing the waste in Newport. We thank the local community for supporting this and by doing so, helping to raise funds for local causes in the process.”

Mrs Rew, on behalf of Newport Primary School, thanked all who contributed and said the money would be used for the schools Eco projects in the future.

The residents of Riverview Lodge Care Home, were equally delighted with the donation and thankful to all those who contributed. The money will be out towards new furniture for the outdoor area.
