CJ Lang & Son Ltd, owners and operators of SPAR Scotland, raised more than £70,000 last year for local causes and charities.

The company donated a generous cheque for £1,000 to the Tarves Playgroup , who over the last 40 years have providing a high quality pre-school service for children aged 2 ½ to 5 years to the residents of Tarves and surrounding areas .

The money was raised through the sale of single-use carrier bags, which costs customers 2p per bag, and was collected and donated to a local charity nominated by the relevant stores. The initiative has been in place since 2008 and has already risen over £300,000 which has been invested directly into the surrounding community.

Playgroup manager Michelle Kennedy said “As a local group heavily reliant on fundraising, we are delighted to receive the support of Spar through the plastic bag initiative. Tarves Playgroup plays a vital role in the early year’s education of the children of the village and we hope to continue for many years to come"

Tarves Playgroup is one of the 32 chosen charities across the country to benefit from the funds raised. Cheques will be donated to various campaigns from youth clubs, sports clubs, elderly care and specialist medical treatment throughout the year.
