Carnoustie High School’s Mini/Midi Rugby Club recently benefited from a generous £500 donation from the town’s two SPAR stores.  Owned and operated by Dundee based CJ Lang and Son Limited, the two SPAR stores donated the monies from the funds raised through the sale of single use carrier bags.

In March 2015 Mini/Midi Rugby Club launched a pilot “School of Rugby” programme at the local High School.  The idea behind the pilot was to deliver a programme of 4 extra-curricular rugby sessions per week to the S1 and S2 year group. The pilot has been a huge success with positive feedback received from all involved and has the possibility of Scottish Rugby funding a wider programme at the beginning of the next school year 2015/16. This could give Carnoustie High School official “School of Rugby” status.

SPAR Carnoustie store manager Murray Ferguson, said:

“We have been charging for carrier bags for a number of years and, in addition to reducing the number of bags going to landfill, have also raised funds to support local good causes.  The Rugby Club is a fantastic idea and we wish them all the best for the future.”
