SPAR HELPS COMMUNITY GROUP KEEP ON DANCING

Woodburn Children’s Drama group founder Mary McFarlane was presented with a cheque for £1615.00 today at SPAR Woodburn Avenue, Dalkeith.

The money has been raised by SPAR’s Woodburn Avenue Store, through the sale of carrier bags. The initiative, which has seen over a staggering £180,000 being raised for local charities since its launch in 2008, donates the 2p charge from every ‘single use’ carrier bag sold.

Every 2p is collected and donated to a locally nominated charity, benefitting not only the local area in which SPAR serves, but also positively impacting on the environment. Such is the case that SPAR has reduced its carrier bag usage by over 40% since the launch of the scheme.

The Primary Service of Woodburn Children’s Drama group is providing an amateur musical theatre group for juniors up to 12years old; however the organiser’s add some additional activities such as Mega-bowl trips, a sports day, discos, a talent show, a sponsored walk and the Christmas party. The youngsters also take their Christmas show on the road with a tour of local old folks' homes.
The group has been running for 11 years. It meets on Wednesdays from 6pm until 8pm. There is also a Sunday group — the Tweenies - for four to seven-year-olds. It is a local family run business that relies solely on donations to keep the group running.
William Marnell, The Store Manager at SPAR Dalkeith said that “the group is one of a kind in the area and gives the kids a much need positive and worthwhile activity to do. And it is definitely a group that the community couldn’t do without.”
