Committee chairman Doug Bowie collected a £100 of vouchers from SPAR Thornhill last week. The vouchers are a welcome boost for the Thornhill Gala Day activities and will be used for refreshments and snacks for the kid’s sports day on July 14th. The fun packed week of quality entertainment for all ages kicks off on Monday, July 9th.
Committee chairman Doug Bowie said: “We are lucky to have a strong, proactive group of individuals on the committee who are willing to dedicate their time and effort to ensuring that residents have the best possible time on gala day and the week leading up to it and we are grateful for every donation that we receive.
The money has been raised by SPAR’s Thornhill store, through the sale of carrier bags. The initiative, which has seen over a staggering £180,000 being raised for local charities since its launch in 2008, donates the 2p charge from every ‘single use’ carrier bag sold.

Every 2p is collected and donated to a locally nominated charity, benefitting not only the local area in which SPAR serves, but also positively impacting on the environment. Such is the case that SPAR has reduced its carrier bag usage by over 40% since the launch of the scheme.

Store Manager Caroline Scott said of the scheme that “It’s a fantastic way to give back to our local community in a way that’s supported by our customers, whilst at the same time reducing our carbon footprint.”
