‘Braveheart’ Hendry launches SPAR’s Win With Every Goal campaign

“It’s a tough group for Scotland with the host nation in it, but if they don’t get beat in their opening game to Germany then I think they have a real chance of progressing out of it.”

Those are the words of former Scotland captain Colin Hendry ahead of the biggest football tournament of the year.

Hendry, who began his career with Dundee and won a famous treble with Rangers in 1998-99, was discussing Scotland’s chances at Hampden Park in Glasgow at the launch of SPAR’s Win With Every Goal customer promotion.

He continued: “I have been very lucky to have captained Scotland at a major tournament, and for a lad who comes from a small town in North East Scotland that hasn’t produced many professional footballers, it was a great honour.

“I would not take away the memories I have got but it must be fantastic for the lads going into this tournament pulling on the Scotland shirt.

“The tournament is not far away in Germany, with fabulous stadiums and facilities out there… It will be a spectacle for the players, and the considerable travelling Tartan Army. Everybody will love it.”

Launching on Thursday 6th June, and running until Sunday 14th July, SPAR distributor CJ Lang & Son Ltd of Dundee will be running the campaign in participating SPAR stores across Scotland alongside James Hall & Co Ltd in the North of England.

To participate in the campaign, SPAR customers visit everygoal.co.uk to submit their details and spin a virtual wheel that will randomly select their team. Customers can then choose to win an instant reward either each time their team scores or concedes a goal. Depending on their choice, they will receive text message alerts detailing their instant reward.

There will also be an online scratch card game available daily, offering participants the opportunity to win one of thousands of prizes. In total, there are over 400,000 instant rewards available to be won across the two SPAR regions. All valid entries from customers in Scotland will be entered into a daily draw for a chance to win £200.

The first valid entry per customer from Scotland, along with all grand prize entries from instant rewards, will be entered into the grand prize draw to win £10,000.

Throughout the duration of the promotion, it will be supported by a comprehensive digital advertising campaign, and there will also be a SPAR truck in Win With Every Goal livery travelling on the road network across Scotland.

On the campaign, Colin added: “I’m very pleased to launch SPAR’s Win With Every Goal campaign for 2024. I have some good friends who work at SPAR and the work they do in supporting grassroots football in my home nation with the Scottish FA is important to me and something I value.

“I think the beauty of Win With Every Goal is that it is free to play, and there is something in it for you as a player whether you get a major team or one of the smaller nations.

“It’s especially fun when you get that text message notification to say you have won a prize, and you can share your experience with family and friends too and get everyone playing it.

“The campaign looks superb and there truly are some great prizes to be won. I’m sure SPAR customers will support it enthusiastically like they did last time – and I will be one of them!”

Despite all the controversies around VAR and the cost of watching football live, Hendry feels that major football tournaments still have that magic to bring a nation together and all will be forgotten about come kick off.

He said: “I think football is still the most entertaining sport there is. It’s universal, and it’s a leveller. Anyone can beat anyone on a given day.

“It doesn’t matter which pub you go in, or in which city, there will almost certainly be a conversation going on about the football and excitement is building ahead of the tournament.

“I know I’m from a footballing family but whenever I go and see my mum up in Keith or I speak to her on the phone within 30 seconds there is a question about football.

“Whether it is about my son Callum who is a professional footballer at Salford City, one of my former clubs, the Scotland national team, it’s just part of society and the British way of life.

“For me personally, if I’m not watching it, I’m playing it. I recently played three charity matches in the space of four days. I don’t know if that was brave or stupid, but I still can’t get enough of it!”

Suppliers supporting the campaign are Walkers, Nestlé Confectionery, Nestlé Hot Beverages, Coca-Cola, Monster, Budweiser, Britvic, AG Barr, Ferrero, Heineken, Cadbury, Pladis, Red Bull, Lucozade, Kellanova, Unilever Ice Cream, Danone, Accolade Wines, Molson Coors, Mars, KP Snacks, Asahi, Carlsberg, Diageo, Pepsico, Rollover, Nomadic, McCain, LSI Germany, LWC, Fyffes, Vimto, BrewDog, Weetabix and Fox Burtons.
