SPAR Scotland briefs retailers on evolving convenience market and future growth opportunities

SPAR Scotland has unveiled a strengthened growth strategy for its independent retailer network, placing Q-commerce and digital capability at the heart of future success, during its 2026 Retailer Briefing.

The update underlined SPAR Scotland’s commitment to supporting independent retailers in a challenging market, with a strong focus on Food to Go and mission-led shopping to drive footfall, grow basket spend, and unlock new revenue streams through rapid delivery and digital engagement.

Bringing together independent SPAR retailers from across the country, the session provided actionable insights to help SPAR partners remain competitive and responsive to changing shopper behaviours.

Retailers were presented with the latest data on the convenience sector, which continues to demonstrate resilience amid economic pressures. However, SPAR Scotland emphasised that growth is increasingly being shaped by shifting consumer expectations around speed, value, and experience.  Despite these challenges SPAR Scotland is outperforming the wider Scottish market through sustained investment in its customer proposition, store estate, operations and supply chain.

The sessions also highlighted the strong performance of recent customer engagement gamification campaign ‘Spin into Spring.’   This was exclusive to SPAR Scotland and delivered 20,000 unique customers, 175,000 daily plays, 45,000 bonus plays, 166,000 vouchers issued with a 26.3% redemption rate. The campaign has been hugely successful surpassing previous initiatives – Frozen Fortune and Win with Every Goal.

The company outlined its growing focus on digital marketing, localised engagement through SPAR Scotland store Facebook pages which will reach a total of 90 stores by June this year, influencer collaborations, and broader social media activity. The business reaffirmed its commitment to championing Scottish sourcing, with 50% of products on SPAR Scotland shelves coming from Scottish producers – aligning with customers’ desire for quality, value, and support for local.

In addition to this the company outlined exciting plans for Q-Commerce as we move into their new financial year that include the development of additional home delivery channels, expansion of Snappy Shopper and a white label proposition.

Looking ahead, SPAR Scotland is actively pursuing a strengthened promotional calendar, large scale campaigns like the World Cup and SPAR’s Great Big Giveaway, hyper local social media advertising, ongoing STV activity and first-to-market opportunities.

Food to Go continues to be a key footfall driver for SPAR Scotland with extended food to go ranges and the launch of a Barista Bar loyalty app from May this year.

Brian Straiton, Independent Sales Director, SPAR Scotland Ltd said; “We continue to take the learnings from our company owned stores and share that with our independent retailers. This includes reviewing specific retailer needs and requirements.  A dedicated area on our retailer website for Food to Go is also being created. This will host everything from product information, packaging, Allergen information, processes and cleaning materials.”

SPAR Scotland reaffirmed its commitment to supporting independent retailers with the tools, insights, and strategies needed to thrive in a competitive market.

Sonya Harper, Chief Operating Officer, SPAR Scotland Ltd commented; “Our role is to ensure our retailers are not just keeping pace with change, but leading it in their communities. By combining national scale with local expertise, we are building a stronger, more agile convenience network across Scotland.”

The company also reminded retailers that further insights will be shared at the company’s annual tradeshow event which returns to Aviemore once again on Thursday 24th September 2026.
