Three SPAR stores in Dundee are the first convenience stores to achieve “Merit” accreditation in the new Safer Retailer Awards scheme. The stores owned and operated by CJ Lang and Son Limited are located in the city’s Hilltown, Orleans Place and Glamis Road. The awards are open to all premises that sell one or more age restricted products and come as an additional bonus to the company who last month won Responsible Retailer of the Year at the Scottish Grocer Awards.
CJ Lang and Son Limited have helped with the implementation of the scheme. Both training and security departments were involved in sharing the company’s practices with the Scottish Business Crime Centre SBCC.
Jackie McCabe, Training Manager, commented:
“Training our staff is hugely important and ensures that all front line staff are up to speed with the latest legislation and that we are trading legally. Regular training also ensures the safety of our staff whilst at work and helps improve the communities that we serve.
It is a credit to all three stores that they have exceeded the high standards set by the SBCC. We welcome the introduction of the awards as a way to raise standards within not just our stores but the industry as a whole.”
The Safer Retailer Scheme is a pilot managed by the Scottish Business Crime Centre (SBCC) in conjunction with the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, the Scottish Retail Consortium and the Scottish Grocers’ Federation. The SBCC are also behind the Best Bar None scheme.
